Soldiers in Your Cup
I love a good joke. Put me in a setting with a new group of friends and it won’t be long before I’m telling an old joke I’ve told a hundred times before and by the time I get to the punch line I’ll be doubled over and laughing hysterically with everybody else.
But, if that joke is wrapped around a subject that I’m passionate about, like coffee—well that makes it extra special and guarantees that I’ll never forget that joke. Ever!
So, the story as I recall it, goes like this: There was a grandmother who went to visit her daughter and her grandson that she absolutely adored. In all honesty …. she was certain that her little grandson hung the moon.
Spending time with the two people she loved the most in all the world was her happy place and nothing compared to the joy they brought her … however she did have a second love and it was quite infectious!
This grandmama LOVED her morning coffee. It was never just a cup of coffee when Grandmama was present. Oh no—the savoring of that first cup of freshly brewed coffee was indeed a sacred ritual that she cherished every morning.
And everyone knew, including her adorable grandson, that to drink coffee in the morning with Grandmama was the best part of waking up.
That adorable little grandson quickly learned the way to his Grandmama’s heart. So, on the first morning of her visit, he proudly presented Grandmama with her first cup of coffee.
Grandmama was delighted … but she was also quite surprised to find a tiny toy soldier at the bottom of her cup.
Inquisitively she asked, “Honey, why is there a toy soldier in my cup?” To which her grandson earnestly replied, “Grandmama it’s like the coffee commercial says … ‘the best part of waking up is soldiers (Folgers) in your cup.”
Grandmama burst out laughing and almost fell out of her chair. And we all laughed too… because it is adorable … but what a Freudian slip!
The GRANDboy inadvertently hit the nail smack dab on its head! Because in all honesty, how you start your day really does matter.
